Teaching Philosophy

As artists we are constantly faced with problems in and outside the studio. How we deal with those problems will determine how successful we are as artists. I like to organize classes that provide both structure (i.e. course objectives) and freedom (i.e. opportunity to arrive at those objectives in different ways). My goal with each class is to provide assignments that illustrate new ideas and techniques. Once those ideas and techniques are introduced, I like to give the student the opportunity to explore them and meet class objectives in his/her own creative way. Sometimes this exploration results in failures. My job is to help students learn from these failures so that they arrive at a workable solution.

It is important to me to provide a classroom setting in which the student feels open to discuss ideas, concerns and fears associated with the class. One of my college instructors always said, “trust is a must or your game is a bust.” I follow this dictum in the classroom. An environment where everyone feels comfortable and safe to explore new ideas is an environment where growth, curiosity, and exploration are most possible.
